|THE WOODS.... about 30 acres of the farm is classified as
'Ancient Woodland', it was mostly planted in the last century and
comprises mostly beech, oak and chestnut. In the gales of 1990 we lost the
whole of the western edge of the woods, this has been replanted and is
maturing well. We have provided walks throughout the woodland areas and in
early May the whole area is a carpet of bluebells. In the past year
through the Countryside Stewardship Scheme we have re-instated some of the
woodland ponds too.
The farm has also been extensively planted with young trees in many areas. a 9 acre field above the garden has been taken out of arable and planted as a new mixed wood and a large shelter belt of young trees has been planted on some of the higher land. There are plans to replant and extend the woodland areas in the future.
