We love a garden that welcomes in nature (and dogs) and the nursery was excellent value . A hidden gem
What a gem! Beautiful, peaceful valleys carefully and lightly managed. A real escape. Good value plants in the nursery too.
Fabulous garden in a valley comprising different groups of plants including water loving, arid loving, woodland and many others - a huge variety. There was so much to see from easy paths which snaked down the valley sides. We took a picnic and sat and watched a pair of Canada geese and their goslings on one of the ponds. A must see for plant collectors (and there's a nursery) or anyone who enjoys walking in a beautiful garden. For those who have difficulty walking far, the garden starts at a high point and there is a useful pick up point at the lowest part of the garden. This was really helpful for my mum, who gets tired quickly. Will be going again to see what the garden has as the flowering season moves on.
So you won’t escape the Devonshire hills but you will be rewarded with beautiful countryside which has been lovingly landscaped in places and left to nature in others. We visit really regularly and appreciate all the changes which appear with both flora and fauna. Plus it’s dog friendly, has a lovely (reasonable) plant nursery. Great for a picnic away from town.
This woodland garden is really extensive. Particularly beautiful this time of year with azaleas, rhododendrons and magnolias out in bloom However, we were told that it's also lovely in the autumn. The words "hidden gem" in some of the reviews are very true.
We came away with a boxful of plants from the nursery. Very good value and some expert advice.
Mr Mort has spent a vast amount of time over the last 30+ years designing and developing a beautiful, huge garden from scratch, in two valleys around an area of mature woodland including some stunning old oaks. The bluebells were out when we visited and we have never seen a more complete carpet of blue, anywhere, ever! As the more recently planted areas mature the gardens will become more and more impressive.
The nursery plants were very reasonably priced, strong and healthy looking, pity we didn’t have more room in the car!

What a wonderful garden to visit ! A riot of colour on one side of the valley and in the valley bottom picking your way along the streams, hearing the bird chatter in the trees and bushes. I was amazed at the vision of the gardener/owner over 30 years.
The visit was culminated with a visit to the nursery where I could have bought a lot of plants if I had place/position to put them in. I would really recommend this garden if you have the capacity to walk and have knowledge and appreciation of plants.
We found this wonderful garden through the Gardeners World magazine and are so glad we did. We met the owner who had designed and planted this amazing space. We sat and listened to the birds singing while enjoying the peace and tranquillity. We will return with our grandchildren and have a picnic. Thank you for sharing your dream.
The nursery of plants was extensive and I am going to be busy today finding space in my garden for the plants I bought yesterday. Can't wait to go back.
